Digipak Photo Shoot Ideas

For my digipak when thinking out how i am going to create it, i have been influenced by, Pixie Lott's front cover image. It is a extreme close up of her face showing emotion which i want my digipak to amplify because of the music video being an showing emotion and the album is about Isabel's story . In addition the black and white edit of the image of Pixie is also how i want to edit my front cover image to also relate to the music video, however i am not going to relate it ballet. Also the use of colour in Pixie's album cover is done by a cross going in turquoise going across it, where as i am going to our artist name in colour, at the moment the colour i think will be pink to keep with the girly theme that is a genre convention of Pop. I want to shoot these extreme close up shots in a studio style room such as the gallery we have in our school building which is all white walls.

Furthermore i am also going to include inside the digipak on one panel is a wide shot of the artist standing in front of a row of multicoloured pastel houses which are located in Notting Hill we are going to set up a shoot there also. I will keep this image in colour to add a more fun and young feel to the digipak inside to also abide to the genre conventions of Pop, which will appeal to Isabel's target audience of 12-25 year olds. Also there will be 2 CDs within the digipak, one of these will be the album CD which will include all the tracks from the album and also the other will be a 'Day in the Life of Isabel Beau'. This is so her fans can get a real life personal one to one view of her life which will appeal to her young target audience, so she can connect with her fans more. The CDs i want to be plain white with light pink typography to relate to the pink typography on the album cover , they will have on them her name and the album title.

The other 2 panels will be the track list for the album and a lyric booklet for the songs on the album CD. Also the track list will be in pink typography to keep the theme going but the i want to include an image relating to the music video battle and the back cover so i am going get a high shot of a ballet dancer draped over holding her feet relating to the music video. The background will be black so the lyrics can then be positioned on the blank part of the image. In addition the lyric booklet for the album i want to have is an over the shoulder shot of our artist but i am not sure in what location. The lyric booklet will appeal to the target audience of Isabel because, the young girls can sing and learn the lyrics to her songs so they can be more like their idol. Also when they go to her concerts they can sing along and wont be left out.

Pitch Contribution

As a group over the half term we have to create a pitch to present to our fellow classmates and teachers on the whole concept of who are artist is and the music video we are going to produce alongside a song of our choice. To make this process easier we decided to do some aspects of the pitch as a group such as the storyboard because this is crucial part of the music video. Also we all need to have our personal opinions and imaginative ideas brought together. So from deciding on this idea we split the rest of the pitch between the four of us, my task for the pitch was to: EXPLANATION OF WHY YOU HAVE DECIDED ON THIS CONCEPT AND HOW IT WILL APPEAL TO THE TARGET AUDIENCE AND 'FIT' INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. DISCUSS THE INFLUENCES YOU HAVE HAD.

This is my part of the pitch:

Artist Profile - 2

This a new and updated artist profile for,Isabel Beau. It shows on the first slide the type Pop artist she is like and the smilier music style and look she has, also basic information about such as her appearance described and her age. In addition the album title is also included and the track list for the album include the song for the music video, 'Battlefield'. Lastly a short biography is included to give the audience some information about her for an example her up bringing and what her album is about.

Start of the Storyboard

In lesson we began to draw out and plan our storyboard. The whole of the music video is going to be in black and white we all agreed on this as it supports the emotions in the music video and this will keep the focus on the girl and her story. however some colour will be featured in the music video for an example;blue lights when the girl is dancing. We first began with the opening sequence of the music video and planning it along with the lyrics to connote emotions and support the narrative.  Laxmi was drawing out the frames of the storyboard, while i was replaying the music so we could decided what shots would relate to the lyrics. Also while this was happening Aaron and Hayley were contributing with cinematography and miss en scene ideas.

The music video begins with the instrumental of the song, the music video will then show a wide shot of a young ballet dancer in a black room with a single spotlight focused on her while she is sitting on the floor. Next the camera will pan round her face and then cut to an extreme close up of the ballet dancers face to focus on her facial expressions. Once the lyrics begin the scene will cutaway to Isabel Beau singing, this supports Goodwin's theory of Pop genre characteristics. This is because the record label will want close up ups and shots of the artist to be shown for advertising and promotions to her fans and the wider audience.

For the music video we are going to be shooting it hand held by using a tripod or a steadicam for it.  The music video will cut between the artist, Isabel Beau singing along to her song and the narrative for the video. The narrative for the music through a range of shots and settings show the struggle of this young ballet dancer who has to deal with the struggles of her parents arguing and show her eventually overcoming this and expressing it through her dancing(ballet).
We believe the shots for the video will have to be short takes and a lot of them to fit the conventions of a music video.

Group Discussion

In lesson time we decided to have a group discussion about the production of our digipak photos, we spoke about topics such as: location, costume and planning the days when to do it. I believe from this discussion we all came up with good ideas and comprised with each other on what what we could do for the photo shoo.t Also decisions were made that were possible for us all to get the best images we want individually for our digipak.

Mood Board

We began to create our mood board for our Pop artist, Izabel Beau.

As individuals we got images from google that related to our artist such as her:appearance, interests and theme for the music video. We chose to do this because it is  visual brainstorm of our artist and instead of explaining through words, we decided through pictures and creating a theme it would be more interesting to look at and understand.

Furthermore after printing and sorting through the range of images we all collected we selected the ones we all agreed would work for the mood board. After making this decision we got an A2 piece of black sugar to stick the images on, we also printed off flowers to use as another background to show girly stereotypical Pop style. We included many ballet images such as the costume and poses that we are going to include in our music video, also the theatre scene we are going to use for our music video. The track list for the album is on the mood board so we can easily access it.

Pop Music Video Analysis - '22' Taylor Swift

In Taylor Swift's music video for the song,'22' before the music being to play mid shots of Taylor are shown, this is done to show who she is to the viewer and it meets the demand of the record company to have lots of close ups of the artist. Also the frame of the video is in the style of Instagram, this is to create a style for the video as it shows she uses social networking sites so she can interact with her fans who are specifically young teenage girls.
Furthermore the change of scene to a house with her a group of girl friends is shown this shows she is close to her friends and enjoys spending time with them, This also relates to the song of '22' which is an age where you have no cares and can do whatever you want. This is amplified by the close up shot of Taylor, wearing a denim shirt and geek glasses making her to be a young character. Also the props of colourful cake is stereotypical of what you would see at a young girl's birthday party.

In addition she is breaking the fourth wall this is done so, teenage girl fans can feel they are specifically been spoken by Taylor so it creates a connection between her and the fans.  There is a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics of the song, the lyrics sung are, 'to fall in love with strangers'.Another mid shot of Taylor is shown at the same time with her making a heart shaped hand gesture and a heart is connoted with love and happiness. Also the lyrics of the song are about love and friendship and this is highlighted throughout the video and is a genre characteristic of the Pop genre.

The video then cuts to another setting of a house with a pool, this includes Taylor and her friends laying on sun loungers. Taylor has a red towel, whereas the other 4 girls all have blue, which relates to the title of the album which the track is on, 'Red'. Also it makes her stand out as she is the main focus of the video because she is the Pop artist and her image is what people relate to when they hear her song. When it gets to the chorus of the song the music changes, the beat of the song increases and bass gets deeper and this relates to the visuals with the confetti and they begin to dance creating a more happier and exciting feel to the music video. Also she makes the hand gesture of '2' which relates to the lyrics of the song, '22'.Taylor and her friends dance in the video which is genre characteristic of the Pop genre however this not a serious choreographed routine with a serious feel it is more relaxed and fun which connects with the song.
Moreover the lyrics and the visuals again relate to each other, a close up is shown of Taylor with heart shaped sunglasses on which connotes love but the style of them is fun and retro. The lyrics, 'but i'll bet you want to' on 'you' points to the camera which is
breaking the 4th wall with her teenage female audience. Also the juxtaposition of the wide shot shown of Taylor and her friends on the beach and the lyrics in the video,'this place is to crowded' have a relationship.

In addition the video highlights that the song relates to friends this is again amplified by the mid shots of the group of girls including Taylor laying on the sand together and the lyrics,'too many cool kids'.The mid shot of Taylor with minimal make up and a hat on to create a chilled and relaxed feel to the video through the use of mise en scene. This is to show her natural beauty to be looked at, this not a genre characteristic of Pop genre music videos typically were the female artist is made to look in a sexual way. The majority of the
cinematography are shots of Taylor to show she is the most important person in the video and highlighting tot he viewer whop she is, an example is a 3/4 shot of Taylor posing on the beach as the sun is setting. This could also show her personality reflecting in the scene of it been a calm night and having fun which relates to the song title,'22' which is an age of having no care and enjoying life with no worries.

The lyrics to the song,'it feels like on of those nights' is supported by a over the shoulder shot of Taylor's reflection in the mirror while getting ready, the mise en scene for her clothing is a glittery dress showing she is going out at night, however the cat ears headband still keeps the young feel to the video. Also the mid shot of Taylor getting her make up done to get is an appeal to her main audience which are teenage girls. Her wearing make up to go out is sterotypically what most girls do before going on a night creating  something that her fans have in common which makes the fans feel closer to her. The close up of Taylor again has depth of field so the background is blurred and the camera is focused on her and the lights which is amplifying her beauty to the viewer.

Furthermore the mid shot of Taylor walking through a house with her friends, she has a light shining down on her making her dress sparkle and stand out. Also it making her friends fade into the black background highlighting as it has done throughout the music video that she is the main attraction. The wide shot of Taylor dancing on the table makes her stand higher in the scene of the house party compared to the other friends dancing on the floor, this instagates she has more power because of her Pop star status. In addition this shot amplifies the sense of being young and having fun that the song and video have been showing throughout.

Lastly the wide shot of Taylor jumping in the pool relates to the song of her having no care and just living for the moment which at the age of,'22' most people do. This also is a message to her fans when they get to this age or right now they should act like this and just have fun.

Production Log

We had 4 categories to plan for for our photo shoot for our digipak photos
which were: location, actors, costume and checklist. Also in half - term this is when when we actually will be taking the photos to included on are digipak.

Location
  1. Drama Hall - We can use the drama hall which is big black room based in our school to use for our photo shoot because there is access to lighting equipment which we can make spotlights to keep with the theme for our music video of dance. On Monday after school we have decided to go to the drama hall and do a test shoot of pictures and concepts we can use for our digipak.
  2. Gallery - In addition another location we can use for our actual photos is the, gallery which is a white room with natural lighting and we can use are own in the space. This would enable us to take pictures of the artist against the white background, so the primary focus would be on her which is genre characteristic of the Pop genre.

Actress/Artist
  • I have been chosen to be the actor for the photo shoot this is because when we need to go to shoots and plan we don't have to comprise as much, given us more flexibility.
Costumes
  • As a group we are unsure on the specific outfits we are going to use for the various photo shoots but I am going to get some outfits out go ether that are bright coloured and girly, which is stereotypically of the Pop genre. I am then going to bring the pictures of the selected outfits in on Monday and share them with the group and then chose the outfits from what i have.

Ideas for Music Video - Black Swan and Pixie Lott

With a rough plan of the narrative for the music video planned out, we began looking for similar films and music videos that could help us with ideas and inspiring us.The two we found was firstly the opening dance from the award winning film, 'Black Swan'. This was chosen because of the ballet theme and storyline and also the cinematography of parts of the film when the ballet dancing is taking place. Also the second music video for the song, 'Broken Arrow' by Pixie Lott this includes contemporary dancing which shows emotion and fits in with the narrative.
In the opening dance at the very beginning it is a black screen then a spotlight appears and focuses on a ballerina all dressed in white, this could be highlighting she is in a dark place and is trying to get out through the light. This could relate to our narrative for the music video where the young girl is trying to escape from the troubles of her homelike through ballet. I believe using this spotlight will be symbolic to her emotions and trying to get through it and will also relate with the lyrics of the song, 'Battlefield'.

In addition the extreme close up focused shots of her feet when she is dancing is something also we want to include in our music video to show her technique and advancement as she grows up.The miss en scene for the dance, is a white ballet outfit which connotes purity and innocence which the girl in the video will have as being vulnerable.
Furthermore, Pixie Lott's music video, 'Broken Arrow' is partly based around a contempaory dance routine which is showing her emotions and creating a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, Goodwin's theory. The video also like, 'Black Swan Opening Dance' is dark and has minimal lighting to create a emotional atmosphere. However she is dressed in a black floaty dress in, 'Broken Arrow' which connotes pain. For our music video using dark tones for the style of the video could be affective and supports our decision to video it in black and white.

Digipak Design

On Friday we began to start designing our digipak's for our artist, Izabela Beau we decided to start planning one together to get a feel for what photos we would need so when we take them it all goes to plan. We drew out 6 panels for the digipak of the layout and what would be on each one, in this one it will include:
  • One album CD
  • Bonus Disc
  • A lyric book
  • Track list
  • Album Cover
  • Picture of Izabela
Our main influence for the digipak design was from Pixie Lott, as she is a Pop artist are our artist singer is familiar to in her style and music. The use of extreme close ups is popular in her album artwork, this is to show who she is and show her to be attractive, also in the two long shots included on the digipak design plan(below) the outfits are glamorous showing her stylish side to her.

Goodwin's Analysis of Cheryl Coles's 'Fight for this Love'

I am going to analyse Cheryl Cole's, 'Fight for this Love' music video which was released in 2009, but i am going to use 'Goodwin's Music Video Analysis' to evaluate and spot out certain features in the video.

At the very start of the music video a extreme close up is shown of Cheryl, this is to show her beauty and also it meets the demand of the record company to have lots of close ups of the artist, so the public know who she is. The music video demonstrates genre characteristics of pop, Cheryl is dancing in the video and there is also backing dancers. Moreover their is a relationship between lyrics and visuals, this is when Cheryl is dancing backwards and the lyrics are, 'are we sitting in reverse?'.
There is intertextual reference in the video when the scene cuts to Cheryl dressed in a black and red outfit which connotes, sexiness, love and danger which makes her look sexual, 'voyeurism'. There are words printed on the wall in the video which reads, 'A Ray Kay Vice'. After researching i found that he is a Norwegian director and photographer who works in LA and is also a music video and commercial director, he must of directed this music video.
The extreme close up of her lips, which are covered in red lip gloss also connote love which relates to the title of the song which includes, 'love'. In addition  the mid shot of Cheryl shows another costume change which is a genre characteristic of the Pop genre. Also she has commodity status because of her looks which appeals to her audience of young females but also males who want to look at her, 'scopophillia'.
Moreover the wide shot of Cheryl and her dancers, are shown dancing to a routine to the up beat tempo of the music which shows a relationship between the two. The mise en scene in the video of another outfit that she is wearing is a, soldier outfit that relates to the British soldiers who work in London, highlighting that she is British and a strong woman. Also the outfit is tight fitting which gives her sex appeal for the male audience to watch the music video, 'voyeurism', and the lyrics are also shown in the background when she is singing to show a relationship between them.

In addition the use of depth of field is used is used in the close up of Cheryl's hands when she clenches them into fists and everything else is out of focus, this relates to the song being played at the time, they lyrics are 'Is sure enough worth fighting for'.
The mid shot of her chest/torso is just shown in the video again creating sex appeal and giving the audience something to look at. Also this shown with another shot of her in leather trousers and her bum is again in focus amplifying her to a beautiful sexy woman. The relationship between the lyrics and visual in the music video are shown again, ' all you can do is make the best of it now'. When she sings this,in the video a mid shot of her point to the screen when the lyric, 'you' is sung, this also is breaking the 4th wall with the audience by pointing at them, creating a closer relationship with her fans.
The male dancers included in the video amplifies that she is singing about a man. This is also supported by the two shot of her and a dancer holding each other when the lyrics,' There's always a place in me you can call home' are played. The shot is showing that she is supportive towards people she loves and cares for. Furthermore the mise en scene in the video shows her with a corset on which is stereotypically seen to be a sexy outfit and the spikes included on the side show she is feisty and strong making her a figure for her fans to look up to but also for men to look at her .

Moreover the mid shot of her Cheryl of her dressed in a tiger printed jacket links also to her, a tiger connotes strength and power amplifying her character in the video of 'fighting for this love'. Also her arms her raised to show this. The beat of the music then intensifies and the tempo increases showing this is the final part of the song, and the visuals of the music video of her dancing gets more powerful and sassy. Cheryl is also in the middle of the dancers creating the focus to be on her because she is the star and the viewer needs to see her. This is a genre characteristic of the Pop genre of close up images of the artist so people know who she is and this is shown again in her wearing a different outfit.

Typography of Artist Title and Name Change

In Monday's lesson me and my group decided to begin to design our typography for our artist, one of the reasons for doing this was for it to be included on the mood board and also for the digipak. We went on to a font website called, 'DaFont' and the decision was made to choose 4 font types and see what they look like with our artists name, Izabel Beau. The category of font we chose was romantic but we wanted something girly and sweet to fit in with the Pop genre and we created a tally chart on powerpoint to hand out to fellow media students to chose their favourite.
As the tally chart shows the first option of typography was their favourite with it getting 3/8 but however we got additional feedback to the name of our artist. A few of the participants believed that her first name, Izabel should be spelt with a,'s' not a 'z' we decided on this originally to make it different. However believe we can do this in other ways with our artist and we are going to change it to, 'Isabel Beau'.

Also we got feedback from our media teacher, Sinead that all 4 typography's from knowing what our artist is and about she didn't get the feel when looking at any of the texts that they suited. With a new name to work with and new fonts to search for on the website we yet again chose another 4 fonts with the name, Isabel Beau and did the tally chart with the same group of media students but also a few extra filled it out.
As seen from the tally chart the second time around the top font got the most votes with 8/15 and we have decided to use this font to be included on our digipak and on our mood board, this will also support us in our pitch for our artist and music video in the coming weeks.

Director Case Study - David Fincher

Track List - Uncovered

As a group we have came up with the album for Izabela's album and the track list which will include the song we are using for the music video, 'Battlefield'.

The title of the album we agreed on to be, 'Uncovered' because the album is about her talking and uncovering her feelings and thoughts about her life in the album because no one really knows her or what she is about. I believe the albums name will connect with the target audience of young females from 12-25 year olds, because they can relate to some of her stories and emotions such as, break ups and being bullied at school that she has gone through  which will create a strong bond with her fans. In addition it will make them feel they are closer to her and know her on a more personal level because they know so much about(which fans want) from her songs and lyrics which will also be printed in the digipak.

Moreover we began to create our song titles for the rest of the album, however we came across the problem of wanting to create a lyric book for the digipak but we would have to then create our own lyrics for the songs which would be to complicated and unnecessary. To overcome this problem we decided to use songs that had already being produced by current Pop artists in the industry that we felt would fit in with the theme of and feel of the album. Some of the artists songs we have include in the album are: Wide Awake - Katy Perry, Taylor Swift - 22 and Beyoncé's - If I was a boy.

Title of the Album - Uncovered
  1. Rhythm of the Night
  2. Wide Awake
  3. Battlefield ( song which we are creating the music video for)
  4. Man Down
  5. All about Tonight
  6. Young
  7. 22
  8. Cheers
  9. How Long Will I Love You
  10. A Year Without Rain
  11. If I Was A Boy
  12. No Air

Green Screen - Katy Perry Digipak Analysis

In Friday's lesson I filmed and uploaded my green screen of me verbally analysing Katy Perry's digipak(Pop genre) from the power point i had previously created. Also from learning how to work and produce a green screen I feel i have gained another skill and I think this will be helpful in some aspects of our music video when producing it.
This is the original recording of my digipak analysis that i did with my group i only decided to speak about Katy Perry's digipak as i felt i a lot to say about it and the comments i made were of a better quality than the others from the Pop genre. In addition after uploading this recording i uploaded it to Final Cut Pro were i began to edit the video and place a picture of Katy Perry's digipak as the background. Moreover l had to move myself into the bottom right hand corner as the picture covered the whole background and i was covering half of it. I ave learnt for my next experience with using a green screen that i need to position myself more to the side of screen and put the camera at a further distance.

Post Modernism

Post Modernism describes anything that looks culturally avant-garde in a old school way. A definition of what post modernism is - a style and concept in the arts characterised by a distrust of theories and ideologies and by the drawing of attention to conventions.

The genres go in cycles=

1) EXPERIMENTAL ------ 2) POST-MODERN ------ 3) CANNON

  • if the experimental stage of genre attempts to establish trends
  • the cannon stage works within those trends to fix them into our cultural understanding
  • poster modernism look at those trends and adds something new in
  • This creates a new experimental stage
THE MUSIC VIDEO
A music video is  post modern stage of the evolution of cinema =

1) SHORT SILENT FILMS ----- 2) FULL LENGTH TALKIES FILMS ------ 3) MUSIC VIDEOS

Post modernism =
  •  becomes the 'new' by referring to the 'old'
  • invents by copying
  • humorous/terrifying
  • can be created by anyone - democratic
INTERTEXTUALITY
John Stuart described a music video as, 'incorporating, raiding and reconstruction'.

  • It is using something that is familiar to the audience/viewer which could generate nostalgic associations and new meanings
  • Music videos are the most known for intertextuality than any other media form
Examples in Music Videos =

Robert Palmer's music video(left) for his song, Addicted to Love (1986) has been parodied several times for its use of females to be seen as a band who like mannequins alongside Palmer himself.
It was copied by Shania Twain (below) for her music video, Man i feel like a Woman (1999)

Another example of intertextuality in a music video is in, Gentlemen prefer Blondes (1953) and it was copied in 1985 in Madonna's, Material Girl.

Location for Filming

Once we decided on the narrative and song for our pop music video, we started to research into locations that we could film, one scene for our narrative idea is to be the girl dancing on stage in a theatre. We then began to look at local theatres that we could film in for free that had a sustainable stage and lighting equipment. One of our choices is the Curzon Cinema,Soho we would be able to go after closing times and use a screen with a small stage to record but a restriction with this location is getting up there and getting an audience to fill the cinema without it looking to bare.

Another location we are considering to film in is the,Bob Hope Theatre which is based in Eltham and is close to us and would be able to access for all of us travelling there. However there are problems facing us with this location also, this is because we would only be able to go there on a sunday morning and we would need Sean to be with us to film there but the school wouldn't authorise it unless all of our parents give informed consent and maybe if one of them accompany is.

Idea for Music Video

We had a group discussion today with a new addition to our group, Aaron we started to speak about the song and the majority of the group including myself did not think the song would work well in creating a music video because of the lyrics. The first idea for our song choice was, T-shirt by Shontelle however now we have made the change to,Battlefield by Jordan Sparks who is still a female pop artist from this song change ideas started developing for our music video.

Moreover the main concept for the narrative of the music video is to with a ballet dancer, which also keeps with the genre of pop that most videos include dancing. The idea is that a young girl who loves ballet uses her dance to overcome from her battling home life where her parents constantly argue and are upset and dancing is her escape to be free from all of this. Also it will include shots and scenes of struggle from the young girl when she is at her dance shows and rehearsal and her parents don't attend and this shows in her dancing. In addition it will be set in various locations such as: a dance studio, theatre, bedroom and street views this will create a raw emotional video that shows her story which is also told in the lyrics of the song.

This is our song for our music video, Jordan Sparks - Battlefield.

In addition we looked at 2 music videos that went with two songs by Pixie Lott who we believe are artist, Izabel beau is similar to, first of all by the songs they write and produce but also their look and style. The two songs are, Gravity and Broken Arrow which both include dancing in them, this also supports are choice to include dance as main theme of our music video.

Artist and Audience profile

This is are brief artist profile for our artist that we created for our Pop Genre female artist. We created this for our pitch next week for our artist and music video. In addition we have looked closely at the pop genre and female artists within to make sure our artist meets all the codes and conventions but also is different to stand out. In addition the age range for our artists target audience has changed with it beginning with a very specific age range of 14-15 year olds, however we believe by broadening the age range to 12-25 years old this will have a bigger market to sell to. Also this age group will be able to relate to her and her music.

In addition as an extra handout to fellow classmates and teachers we created a small handout which gave some brief information about Izabel so people could understand who she is and what she is about in a short time. Moreover having the ballet dancer as the background for the artist profile is hinting what the music video is going to include and the theme for the video.
